Margate...a centre of creativity

With the Turner Contemporary, the Old Town and the restoration of Dreamland's funfair, Margate is a seaside town that is definately on the up!

The veteran theme park has reopened after an £18million refurb and has classic rides like dodgems, helter skelters and cyclones alongside fish ’n’ chip shops and champagne bars. It has appealed to such a large range of people with the funfair rides that children love as well as re-creating the scenic railway and taking the adults back to their childhoods.

Margate is not only a town thats on the up, its a town that is creatively on the up. Wayne Hemingway, David Chipperfield and Grayson Perry are among the design stars helping to turn Margate into a centre of creativity. The new Dreamland is cool but retro. Its colourful and fun yet embodies the old and the new! Former Red or Dead clothes designer Mr Hemingway – who built the Bridge development in Dartford – said Dreamland will add to the resurgence of Margate... “It is going to be a success because it is a great idea in the right time and right place. If you look at what is happening in the world at the moment and the best places in terms of regeneration are places which have fallen on their backsides and then been picked up by the young creative community who decided there is an opportunity there. They see a way of making a silk purse out of a sow's ear.”

Like Mr Hemingway says, Margate has a young creative community who decided there is an opportunity in Margate. It is these creative minds and this love for Margate that has made it what it is today. It is colourful, exciting and a hive of activity.

Zoe Murphy is just one of the young creative Margate designers bringing more interest to margate. Zoe Murphy promotes the idea of ‘Loving what belongs to you’ by printing onto recycled furniture and textiles using imagery inspired by her seaside hometown.

It is so wonderful to see this creativity in Margate. It inspires more and more people, creating more and more creativity. Margate is definately worth a visit if you havent already!
