The Vitra Belleville Chair & Table Debut – Milan 2015
Designed by the Bouroullec brothers for Vitra, the Belleville chair comes as a practical yet refined plastic chair composed of two basic components, being a structural frame and seat shell.
Outlining the beautiful lines of the legs following through to the back, the slender frame sits under a thin shell which tapers from the wide seat surface into a narrow backrest. The structure of the Belleville chairs makes way for many new outlooks for the significance of a simple plastic chair. This is due to the defining features of the seat shell.
The Belleville chair seat shell comes in either coloured polypropylene, moulded plywood veneer or upholstered in leather or fabric. The Belleville Chair is converted from a modest plastic chair to a wooden chair to an upholstered chair dependant on your preference. It can even come as an armchair with forward slanting armrests.
Ronan & Erwan took inspiration from the classic bistro styled tables for the Belleville table, but due to the extensive range of table top finishes and materials, the Belleville has a much more variable appearance. Keeping with the similar cursive lines of the Belleville chair, the thin legs follow a smooth, uninterrupted, curved line from the splayed bottom through to the central column reaching to the table top.
In star-shaped or paired configurations, they form bases for small and large bistro tables or dining tables.
