Vitra Potence Wall Lamp
The Potence Wall Light was originally created in 1950 by Jean Prouvé as a pivoting lamp for his 'Maison Tropique' flat-pack house concept. While the house itself didn’t achieve commercial success, many of its individual components—such as this lamp—have come to be celebrated as icons of modern design. The allure of the Potence lies in its minimalist use of materials and form.
Essentially, Potence is a pure, two-metre-long cantilevered arm, supported by a sturdy wall bracket and a tensioned steel wire. At its end is a standard E27 screw fitting, compatible with most bulbs (an LED bulb is included). Thanks to its extended reach and pivoting design, it works equally well as a reading light beside a sofa or as general lighting when swung toward the center of a room.
The lamp is finished in a gloss black and ecru color scheme, faithful to Prouvé's original vision, and includes a turned beechwood handle and an inline dimmer. The optional Abat-Jour Conique—the first lampshade designed for the Potence by Prouvé in 1947—is also available. It fits simply over the bulb and can be removed as needed, making it suitable for both the Potence and Petite Potence models.
